In Photo 201, you’ll advance your photography skills and gain mastery over manual settings to capture images with precision and creativity. This course covers:
- Exposure Triangle Mastery: Dive into how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together in the "exposure triangle" to achieve proper exposure in various lighting scenarios.
- ISO Essentials: Understand the role of ISO in exposure, learning how to adjust it for low-light conditions and challenging lighting situations, taking control of ISO directly and exploring strategies for reducing high ISO noise issues.
- Metering Modes & Exposure Behavior: Explore your camera's powerful metering modes for greater control over difficult scenes, and gain insights into the 18% grey methodology to understand why cameras may over- or underexpose.
- Manual Mode Expertise: Take full control by turning off automatic settings, achieving consistent exposure, and mastering manual mode where ultimate exposure and creative control are desired. Learn how to photograph almost anything using a simple methodology for getting correct exposure quickly and effortlessly.
- Using the Light Meter: Learn how to use your camera’s built-in light meter effectively in manual mode to achieve accurate exposures every time, and for on the fly exposure adjustments.

WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR
Photo 201 is designed for photographers who have a solid understanding of their camera’s aperture and shutter priority modes, as well as the basics of ISO control and focus. Completing our Photo 101 course is highly recommended for gaining these essential skills before advancing to Photo 201. This series of photography classes will help you build confidence in shooting in manual mode for the ultimate in creative possibilities. Come join our camera school!
Please note, our courses are tailored for adult learners, and we welcome participants aged 18 and over.
CAMERA REQUIREMENTS
This course is designed for users of digital interchangeable lens cameras, including DSLR and mirrorless models.
We support interchangeable lens cameras from:
- Canon
- Nikon
- Sony
- Fujifilm
- and others
To get the most out of the course, please bring your camera along with a tripod (a full-size tripod is recommended, though a tabletop model is acceptable). If you’re unsure if your make/model is suitable, use our contact form to inquire. We'd be happy to help!
OUR LOCATION
We’re excited to offer our popular Photo 201 (4-week) course at 9 Davies Ave, located at Queen East and the DVP in Riverside. Detailed information, including directions, TTC access, and parking options, will be provided to enrolled participants before the course begins.
This course is not available in the online format and is scheduled approximately every six to eight weeks in our Riverside location.
Attending Photo 201
Photo 201 is the pinnacle learning experience for advancing your photography skills. Some tips for success:
- Attend and complete Photo 101 to ensure a solid foundation
- We presume that you are comfortable changing camera settings, controlling focus, navigating your camera menus etc
- Bring your tripod to give yourself more of a hands-on experience with the course activities in studio
- Ask questions, be curious, there's a lot of great information provided
- Make time for the homework assignments if you can - they will help you gain practical experience (FLICKR.COM)
